Outside of combat, troops can be upgraded using experience points and silver. For experience new weapons and equipment are unlocked, and for coins they are bought. There is a separate scheme for generals. Because they are important characters, they can be taught new orders for experience points. The nature of the orders depends on the role of the commander. Offensive commanders get to speed up their charges rushing to attack, while defensive generals can help build up their soldiers' defense. At first, there are a pair of distinguished warlords for each of the three factions.
