Shank is the Mowgli of the gaming industry. A guest from the distant past, dressed in all the cufflinks and ruffles of the present. As it turned out, such a tandem conceals the secret synergistic power of nostalgic charm and visual charm of today's technologies.

Not a machete, but it kills

By its structure, Shank is a two-dimensional fighting platformer that was popular back on Dendy. TNMN, Double Dragon is from the same series. We run headlong forward, cutting down everything that meets us on the way. But there is no need to complain about the antiquity of the formula – Shank perfectly introduces the newly arrived mechanics of the main slashers of the last decade. Here, for example, is the choice of weapons. Our hero calmly carries with him three types of deadly supplies, divided into categories:

1. A slow but very powerful melee weapon.
2. Firearms.
3. Fast melee weapon.

Each of the options has its own button, so even within 2 seconds we can use at least all three – we would only have time to do everything. On such a combination, the local gameplay is formed: although the situations are similar, but the fights are diverse - the main thing is to learn how to entertain yourself. The weapons themselves are also not the same: pistols can be replaced with UZI or grenades, a club is changed to a chainsaw, and knives – to blades. And this is just one example.

At the end of each level, traditional bosses are waiting for us, each of which needs its own approach. The game itself, by the way, takes place in just 4-5 hours, so it's simply impossible to get bored here. For fans, there is also a cooperative mode – in fact, the same passage, only for two.

The second part, released 2 years later, did not make any key changes to the process, but seriously enriched the visual part. Shank 2 not only in spirit, but also in appearance began to resemble the purest American bi-movie: every new enemy here is served in close-up with bloody letters, every boss necessarily throws out a pretentious evil quote, and every new plot squiggle is deliberately idiotic and cliched.

The game itself has remained almost the same. Yes, the levels have been complicated by adding traps here. Yes, the graphics have become a little prettier, and the camera has been brought closer to the hero. But in general, it's still the same Shank, only bigger and better. But there is no co
