If Square Enix has an ideal formula for creating Final Fantasy, then the first line there will probably be something about the absolute dissimilarity of the game to the previous part. In Final Fantasy 9, this thesis was raised to the absolute – the game not only ignored all the achievements of the 8th part, but also did not notice the trends of the gaming industry in recent years.

Forward to the past

It is still unknown what prompted Square Enix to such a sharp change of course. Perhaps somewhere on the mezzanine, the developers had a cool script written a long time ago, which is why it was decided to make the game like this. However, the viewer already manages to state some things in the first couple of minutes:

1. The customization of characters was completely removed from the game, leaving only the choice of the initial group.
2. From the realistic setting, Final Fantasy 9 has returned again to the classic anime dolls on the map.
3. The modern setting was replaced by the Middle Ages.
4. The plot turned from serious to fabulously instructive.

Surprisingly, even the general naivety of the plot is revealed by the developers literally with the appearance of the first characters. All as one here are infantile neurasthenics, heroes are functions necessary only to advance through history. By the way, there are practically no complaints about the story itself, if you are not initially confused by the genre of an instructive fable.

The role model has also changed seriously. Final Fantasy 9 dramatically reduces the amount of freedom, initially prescribing the pumping of each character. Upon reaching a new level, your ward will pump up the skills that were conceived by the developers. On the one hand, this limits you in maneuvers, on the other hand, this approach allowed Square Enix to calculate in advance the "smart" tactics, the complexity of which increases every hour.

As a result, the series went in a strange direction, which even the Japanese themselves can hardly explain. The open world was replaced with absolute linearity, which only added to the excitement of the battles, but greatly undermined the public opinion about the game.
