Battle Brothers is an open—world role-playing game with many familiar medieval fantasy elements. You lead a group of mercenaries and recruit new people into the community, manage their skills and equipment, and then wander around the world looking for trouble.

Description

The world map in which you move your group resembles Mount & Blade, and the turn-based Tactical Combat game. It consists of hexadecimal plates. Forests, meadows and mountains merge in a truly charming and organic way. The characters on the tactical battle map have a "Bust" that relies on a base unit rather than a fully processed body – this is a good choice, from a design and aesthetic point of view.

By limiting the need to draw and animate the lower half of the body, the artists were able to focus on creating a unique component-based visual style for their characters.

Gameplay

You maneuver your group from city to city, looking for contracts to fight criminals and monsters, or to escort caravans through the world map. You can also hire new people and buy equipment. Money and food are used to pay and feed your troops, tools to repair equipment after the battle. The combat system is amazing, having a delicate balance between the skills of your characters, the quality of their equipment and pure luck. Another big mechanical innovation is that a character's equipped weapon determines his attack skills.

While a character equipped with a spear can make many strikes that can pierce the armor of opposing opponents, a character with a huge axe can rotate in a circle to hit everyone nearby. There are some good combinations built into the gameplay where one character can stun an enemy and then the other can finish the job.
