Yume Nikki is a surreal exploration game developed by Kikiyama and released in 2004.

Gameplay

The player assumes the role of Matsoduki, a girl of unidentified age who never leaves her room. You can watch TV (on which no channel works), play on the console (in one game) or go out on the balcony to look at some fog. Or you can fall asleep. As soon as Matsoduki falls asleep, she finds herself back in her room, but all things are completely different. And when you try to go out the door, there are 12 more doors in front of you. Each of them leads to a small "world". Each of these worlds has even more locations, many of which are connected by gates, doors, teleports or mazes. some lead to dead ends. All of them are filled with surreal images and various hum sounds. The goal of the game is to get 24 "effects" scattered around the world of dreams, which will unlock the finale. Effects can be used:

1. To change the appearance of the main character.
2. Learning new abilities.
3. Reaching new areas or triggering certain events.

Yume Nikki was called an "anti-game" due to the lack of typical "game" elements. There is no dialogue. There is no monologue except Matsoduki, who sometimes says "No/Impossible" when the player tries to leave the room or do forbidden actions. You just walk around, look around, dream. There are no explanations. As mentioned earlier, the game has mazes in which you can easily get lost. There are also giant monsters that consume Matsoduki.
