This War of Mine was released during the period of the colossal dominance of Survival simulators and, without using any fresh mechanics, was able to do the main thing - to give people new emotions.

Hidden conflict

This War of Mine is a survival simulator of an ordinary person during the war.  And although the name of the war itself and even the country in the game is not called, the analogies are obvious – and the allegory of the project refers us to the Yugoslav crisis. Several people climb into a dilapidated house and try to do everything so that this monastery will help them survive all the horror that is happening.

You will have to play for several (different people each time). In total, there are about ten characters in the game, but there is no point in collecting a full squad in the house – it is almost impossible to feed more than 5 people. That's why our style of play always adapts to the skills of the squad.

This War of Mine is divided into two phases. The first is home improvement. We rake out everything superfluous from the house, find some useful resources (wood, beds, shovels) and equip rooms for household needs. We'll put together a simple bed, equip a rainwater filter, create a simple greenhouse for growing vegetables – and now, you can already live.

The second phase is the direct extraction of resources. To make a bed, you need a tree and a mattress, which can be obtained by a sortie into the city. Since the war stops at night, sorties are carried out at night. Here begins the scenario part of This War of Mine.

Each sortie is made to a certain place. The choice depends on the necessities: it is obvious that in the garage we will find materials for construction, and, for example, in the store – leftovers on the shelves. Therefore, every night raid requires a thorough analysis of needs.

This is where the individual feature of the character begins to be important. Someone can be a good cook who will make food for everyone from a couple of products, someone can steal a lot of things in a raid, and someone will kill an interfering competitor without a twinge of conscience.

The terrible features of the war are reflected in This war of mine with documentary detail. Something happens to you on every night outing. In the store you can find violence against a woman trying to get food for children, in a dilapidated mansion, a wounded father and a young son ask for help with food, and in the basement of the church there is a real prison for heretics.

It is difficult to pass This War of Mine. Heroes go crazy, get sick, starve, commit suicide. Bandit raids are being carried out on your camp, and the most important night raids can bring too little food. All this makes the game almost a realistic survival simulator during the war – and one of the
