The Book of the Dead: Lost Souls / Necronomicon (2006) PC

The Book of the Dead: Lost Souls is the first game with anime–style graphics developed by Russian igrostroi in 2006. Far from a high-budget project, three categories of gamers will be interested at once: fans of the visual novel genre, fans of the work of the master of horror Howard Lovecraft and actually fans of Japanese cartoons for adults.

Plot

Time and place of action – the 20s of the last century, USA. A young man named Charles had a difficult past, but fate had prepared a gift for him – a certain uncle Abner died, but bequeathed a mansion near Dunwich. The guy, without hesitation, goes to the estate with his wife Emily to fulfill the last will of the late uncle and spend a month there until the will comes into force.

The house looks gloomy and frightening, because it keeps a lot of terrible secrets that the newlyweds will have to face. Charles doesn't know much about the creepy secrets and occult rituals associated with his family. Now he will have to pay for the use of supernatural abilities by his ancestors, obtained with the help of the ancient book "Necronomicon".

It is the name and the possibilities of the mystical manuscript that connect the game with the work of Lovecraft. The story of the creation of the "Necronomicon" was invented by the writer, and he referred to this hoax in 18 of his stories.

Gameplay and graphics

The gameplay corresponds to the declared genre. The narrative unfolds on the screen with the help of pictures with subtitles. After reading the text (in Russian), the gamer must make a choice of several phrases that determine the further development of the plot. Depending on the solutions, there are several alternative endings.

The graphic design of the game is not inferior to the graphics of Japanese anime projects, which is the merit of a professional artist who worked on illustrations. There are several scenes with nudes in the novel, but you should not expect more explicit episodes.
